If you know me, you know I pretty much constantly have a podcast playing. I listen to them in the shower, to help me fall asleep at night, and even when I’m doing work. I’m frequently switching up which podcasts I’m subscribed to, but the below is what I’m into right now. Here are the best free podcasts to listen to IMO!!
The Morning Toast
This podcast is hosted by GirlWithNoJob, aka Claudia Oshry, and her sister, Jackie Oshry. It’s cool because it’s available on YouTube as well as in (free!) podcast form. Not going to lie, this podcast took a bit of time for me to warm up to, but now I LOVE IT and I LOVE THEM. Jackie and Claudia deliver the “fast 5 stories you need to know before you wake up and take a bite out of your morning toast” every morning, Monday-Friday. It’s a great mix of pop culture news and biz news (but heavy on the pop culture ;)). The reason I wasn’t in love with this podcast at first is because they talk a lot about their personal lives before they get to the actual news of the day – which isn’t that interesting until you’re actually invested in them. However, I have grown to loveeee listening to them shoot the shit, and Claudia isn’t just a loud mouth (as I had previously assumed TBH!!), she’s actually HILARIOUS and super smart.
The Family Secrets Podcast
This podcast is definitely on the more serious side, but it’s juicy AF and SO interesting. The host, Dani Shapiro, discovered a shocking family secret after both of her parents passed: her father is not actually her biological father. She grew up in an Orthodox Jewish community, and everyone always joked that she isn’t Jewish looking at all. Guess this isn’t such a joke anymore. Also, growing up in this community meant her parents reallyyyy had to keep the secret on the DL! Anyways, the realization of this secret spurred her to start a podcast of her own, and interview other’s about their respective family secrets. The secrets are usually really emotional and pretty wild. All I can think about is how some of these stories are so fascinating and just neeeeed to be made into a movie!
Diet Starts Tomorrow
This podcast is for every girl that has a weird relationship with food, AND has a sense of humor about it. Hosted by Betches founders Sami and Aleen, they discuss their feelings towards the crazy Instagram fitness culture, insane pressures put on women to look a certain way, confusion with all of the fad diets currently being promoted at every turn, and generally wanting to be skinny AF but not wanting to diet. I love hearing Sami and Aleen talk about their struggles with eating healthy, growing up feeling “fat,” and complaining about not knowing how to properly be “healthy” – it’s SO relatable. They also have awesome guests come on the show, like Rumble co-founder Noah Neiman and fitness influencer Kelsey Wells, as examples.
This is another more serious podcast. Listeners write in asking for advice, and hosts Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond give their thoughts. However, the problems these listeners are facing are INTENSE/often pretty dark, and I seriously respect the hosts for being able to offer such sound advice while also being empathetic. They face topics should as sexual harassment, cheating, death, tough family dynamics – you get the picture! The hosts are so smart, and have definitely been through their fair share of trauma as well, which makes me even more invested as I’m sure they have a thing or two to teach us.
How I Built This
This podcast interviews successful entrepreneurs to hear the stories behind how they “made it.” It’s super inspiring! My favorite episodes are with Sara Blakely of Spanx, Jen Rubio of Away, Dave Dahl of Dave’s Killer Bread, and Angie & Dan Bastian of BOOMCHICKAPOP. It’s interesting to hear all of the “failures” each entrepreneur faced before they had their first major success – it sends an awesome message. It also goes to show how much work being an entrepreneur really is, and how resilient you have to be. Side note, I love the host Guy Raz’s voice. :p
We Met at Acme
Hosted by 28-year-old Lindsey Metselaar, this is a podcast about dating in NYC. (For those of you who don’t know, “Acme” is a popular/somewhat exclusive bar in NYC). Lindsey interviews tons of different kinds of people on this podcast – bloggers/influencers (hey, should I go on the podcast? ;)), finance bros, dating coaches, therapists, her friends, entrepreneurs, and more. She gets right into it with the real questions on past relationships, cheating, ghosting, dating multiple people at once and EVERY nosy question you might have – that’s why I really think this is one of THE best free podcasts to listen to! Lindsey also offers some great advice, and I totally relate to her “dating journey.” She talks about how she cringes looking at past texts to guys, and I FEEL THAT. So, it’s cool to hear from someone who has been super cringe-y like all of us, but has since blossomed into a super mature NYC gal in a real relationship #goals.
This podcast delivers the most important news of the day, every day of the week. Each episode is only about 13 minutes long, and I love that they break the news down into a very easy-to-digest podcast format. The Skimm understands that we are busy people (TY!!), and want to deliver the most complicated and important stories of the day in a matter-of-fact while still friendly tone. Staying on top of the news is important, and I’ve found that this is the easiest way for me to do so.
Those are the best free podcasts to listen to. Thanks for reading and let me know if you end up listening to any of these. <3
